1,3-Dibromopropane is a halogenated hydrocarbon. When at room temperature, it is a colorless to light-brown liquid with sweet odor.
It is very useful to form C3-bridged compounds such as through C-N coupling reactions. 1,3-Bromopropane is used as a chemical intermediatein the production of a wide range of products including pharmaceuticals, insecticides, quaternary ammonium compounds, flavoring agents, and fragrances. It is also used as a solvent for fats, waxes, and resins, and as an alternative to ozone-depleting solvents (eg, chlorofluorocarbons).
