Methyl tert-butyl ether (also known as MTBE, tert-butyl methyl ether, tertiary butyl methyl ether, and tBME) is an organic compound with the molecular formula (CH3)3COCH3. MTBE is a volatile, flammable, and colorless liquid that is sparingly soluble in water. It has a minty odor vaguely reminiscent of diethyl ether, leading to an unpleasant taste and odor in water. MTBE is a gasoline additive, used as an oxygenate to raise the octane number. Its use is controversial in the US and declining in use in part because of its occurrence in groundwater and legislation favoring ethanol.
Methyl tert-butyl ether is currently a replacement for tetraethyl lead. It is produced by pyrolysis of carbon tetrabutyrene and methanol as raw materials, under the catalytic action of macroporous sulfonic acid cation exchange resin, and refined.
Product performance: This product has a camphor-like odor, colorless and transparent, and can be completely miscible with alcohol, ether, aliphatic hydrocarbon, aromatic hydrocarbon, halogenated solvent at room temperature. Like other methyl tertiary alkyl ethers, this product has another very important property, namely, it is highly resistant to auto-oxidation and is not easy to form peroxides.
It is mainly used as a blending agent for high-octane gasoline in refineries. It can also be used as a solvent for paraffin, oil, spices, alkaloids, resins, rubber, and organic synthesis reagents. Flammable and volatile, there is a danger of explosion in case of fire and heat.
