JACK BEAN MEAL
JACK BEAN MEAL
Jack beans may be used as a "crude urease." Jack beans (Canavalia ensiformis) is a potential source of protein and local feed ingredient. It contains essential amino acids. Jack bean is also rich in phenol, isoflavones, niacin, saponins, and fibre and possesses hypocholesterolemic properties.
Jack bean meal is much less expensive and is more stable in the presence of soluble salts than is refined urease powder. Percent recoveries in terms of protein equivalent for 3 types of feed ranged from 96.1 to 98.9, using the proposed method.
Most jack beans are white with a black seed scar, while most sword beans are red. ... Both beans are edible in the immature stage. The young tender pods can be sliced and boiled or the beans can be shelled out and eaten like broad beans.
