Acetic acid systematically named ethanoic acid / is a colorless liquid organic compound with the chemical formula CH3COOH (also written as CH3CO2H, C2H4O2, or HC2H3O2). When undiluted, it is sometimes called glacial acetic acid. Vinegar is no less than 4% acetic acid by volume, making acetic acid the main component of vinegar apart from water. Acetic acid has a distinctive sour taste and pungent smell. In addition to household vinegar, it is mainly produced as a precursor to polyvinyl acetate and cellulose acetate. It is classified as a weak acid since it only partially dissociates in solution, but concentrated acetic acid is corrosive and can damage the skin.

Acetic acid is the second simplest carboxylic acid (after formic acid). It consists of a methyl group attached to a carboxyl group. It is an important chemical reagent and industrial chemical, used primarily in the production of cellulose acetate for photographic film, polyvinyl acetate for wood glue, and synthetic fibers and fabrics. In households, diluted acetic acid is often used in descaling agents. In the food industry, acetic acid is controlled by the food additive code E260 as an acidity regulator and as a condiment. In biochemistry, the acetyl group, derived from acetic acid, is fundamental to all forms of life. When bound to coenzyme A, it is central to the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats.

Acetic acid is used as an antiseptic due to its antibacterial qualities
The manufacture of rayon fiber involves the use of ethanoic acid.

Medically, acetic acid has been employed to treat cancer by its direct injection into the tumor.

Being the major constituent of vinegar, it finds use in the pickling of many vegetables.

The manufacture of rubber involves the use of ethanoic acid. It is also used in the manufacture of various perfumes.

It is widely used in the production of VAM (vinyl acetate monomer).
When two molecules of acetic acid undergo a condensation reaction together, the product formed is acetic anhydride.

Ethanoic acid is widely used in many industries.

Commercially it is used in the manufacturing of esters, vinegar, and many polymeric materials.

Vinegar has been shown to reduce high concentrations of blood sugar.

Used as an agent to lyse red blood cells before white blood cells are examined.

Used as a solvent in the production of camphor, ascent, and cooking ingredients.

Used as a stop bath for photographic emulsion development.

Farmers sometimes spray acetic acid on livestock silage to fight fungal and bacterial growth.

Use as solvent

Glacial acetic acid is an excellent polar protic solvent, as noted above. It is frequently used as a solvent for recrystallization to purify organic compounds. Acetic acid is used as a solvent in the production of terephthalic acid (TPA), the raw material for polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
