A degreaser is a solvent-based or solvent-containing and metamorphic cleaning agent. It is a chemical product mostly used for the removal of water-insoluble substances such as grease, paint, oil, lubricants, corrosive products, abrasive dust and all other organic films. This cleaning agent is especially made for the removal of grease.
Degreasers can be solvent-based or solvent-containing substances, and may contain surfactants as active ingredients.
6 Different Types of Degreasers :-
1.Environmentally Compatible Degreasers :
Many of the most effective degreasers are also the safest for the environment. These include vinegar, lemon juice, cornstarch, borax, baking soda, and castile soap. Several makers of dishwashing liquids also add natural grease-cutters, such as lemon and other citrus oils, to their formulas. These are safe to use on tile surfaces, glass, stainless steel, copper, and brass.
2. Ammonia-based Degreasers :
These degreasers have been used for decades to clean glass, stainless steel, chrome, and tile. In the low concentrations made for home use, they work quickly and effectively without harm to the environment.
3. Liquid Degreasers :
When used full-strength, liquid degreasers clean quickly and thoroughly. They can also be diluted with water or solvents for lighter-duty cleaning. Other types of liquid degreasers, such as Tri-sodium Phosphate (TSP), are powder concentrates that are mixed with water to form effective degreasers. TSP is recommended for removing built-up grease and wallpaper glue residue from interior walls before painting or repapering.
4. Foam Degreasers :
Foam degreasers are popular for such applications as cleaning electrical appliances and car engines, as they wipe off completely without the need to rinse with water.
5. Powder Degreasers :
Powders like talc and cornstarch can be sprinkled onto large areas, such as carpeting, tile, and wood flooring. After allowing them to work for a few hours, the powders can be swept up or vacuumed. On garage floors and paved driveways, use powdered lime directly on oil and grease spills. Leave the powder on overnight, then sweep or vacuum the next day.
6. Petroleum-based Degreasers :
These degreasers, which contain petroleum distillates and ethanol, are best for vehicle and engine parts, as they can readily dissolve the grease and sludge left behind by gasoline, oil, and other lubricants in engines and vehicle parts.
How to Apply Degreaser
Step 1 - Blow out Dirt and Dust
Connect the air nozzle to your air compressor and blow out any dirt and dust from the area which you want to degrease. If you don't have a compressor, you can use a can of compressed air as an alternative.
Step 2 - Cover Electronic Parts
Take some plastic garbage bags and cut them into more manageable pieces. Then, use some masking tape to tape the plastic bag so that it protects any electronics or sensitive areas. You might want to tape over the spark plug or other electrical areas to keep them from getting wet.
Step 3- Spray on Degreasing Agent
Take your degreasing agent and spray it liberally on application area. Make sure to spray in between cracks and crevices and to use plenty of the degreasing liquid. Don't be afraid of spraying on too much degreaser as the more you spray on, the more effective it will be. Allow the degreasing agent to sit on the area for about 30 minutes before continuing.
Step 4 - First Rinse
After the degreasing agent had enough time to set in and starts eating away at the dirt and grime, take a water hose with a high-pressure spray nozzle and thoroughly rinse the motorcycle engine.
Step 5 - Apply More Degreaser
Again, spray a generous amount of degreaser agent on the area.
Step 6 - Scrub Away Dirt and Grime
While the degreaser is still on the area, take a scrub brush and start scrubbing the surface area of the area. You can use an old toothbrush to reach into small cracks and other hard to reach places. Continue to scrub the area until all of the dirt and grime has been loosened.
Step 7 - Rinse and Dry the area
Again, use the water hose and high-pressure spray nozzle to thoroughly rinse the motor. Then, allow the engine to dry completely.
Step 8 - Treat Rubber Parts
Take the rubber protectant and use it to coat any rubber boots, wire covers or other rubber components on your motorcycle engine. This will clean them and also help to moisturize and protect them.
Step 9 - Clean Up the Chrome
Use the chrome polish to clean up any chrome pieces from area to be degrease.
Step 10 - Take Off Plastic
Remove the plastic and masking tape from electronic areas.
