What is the use of methylene chloride?
Methylene chloride, also called dichloromethane, is a volatile, colorless liquid with a chloroform-like odor. Methylene chloride is used in various industrial processes, in many different industries including paint stripping, pharmaceutical manufacturing, paint remover manufacturing, and metal cleaning and degreasing.

Is methylene chloride harmful?
Exposure by any route can cause CNS depression. Ingestion of methylene chloride can cause severe gastrointestinal irritation. Carbon monoxide, a metabolite of methylene chloride, may contribute to delayed toxic effects. The fetus and neonates are particularly vulnerable to poisoning with carbon monoxide.

 

Why is methylene chloride used as a solvent?

Dichloromethane is a volatile, colourless liquid, with a mildly sweet, not unpleasant odour. It's immiscible with water but can dissolve a wide range of organic compounds. These properties make it the perfect solvent for use in the lab, and indeed that how I used it - to separate and extract organic products.

Is methylene chloride a carcinogen?

The predominant means of exposure to methylene chloride is inhalation and skin exposure. OSHA considers methylene chloride to be a potential occupational carcinogen. Short-term exposures to high concentrations may cause mental confusion, lightheadedness, nausea, vomiting, and headache.
