Formaldehyde is a naturally occurring organic compound with the formula CH2O (H−CHO). The pure compound is a pungent-smelling colorless gas that polymerizes spontaneously into paraformaldehyde (refer to section Forms below), hence it is stored as an aqueous solution (formalin). It is the simplest of aldehydes (R−CHO). The common name of this substance comes from its similarity and relation to formic acid.

Industrial applications

Formaldehyde is a common precursor to more complex compounds and materials. In approximate order of decreasing consumption, products generated from formaldehyde include urea-formaldehyde resin, melamine resin, phenol-formaldehyde resin, polyoxymethylene plastics, 1,4-butanediol, and methylene diphenyl diisocyanate. The textile industry uses formaldehyde-based resins as finishers to make fabrics crease-resistant. Formaldehyde-based materials are key to the manufacture of automobiles and used to make components for the transmission, electrical system, engine block, door panels, axles, and brake shoes.

Niche uses

Disinfectant and biocide

An aqueous solution of formaldehyde can be useful as a disinfectant as it kills most bacteria and fungi (including their spores). It is used as an additive in vaccine manufacturing to inactivate toxins and pathogens. Formaldehyde releasers are used as biocides in personal care products such as cosmetics. Although present at levels not normally considered harmful, they are known to cause allergic contact dermatitis in certain sensitized individuals.

Photography

In photography, formaldehyde is used in low concentrations for process C-41 (color negative film) stabilizer in the final wash step, as well as in the process E-6 pre-bleach step, to make it unnecessary in the final wash.

Uses of formaldehyde

When formaldehyde is dissolved in water, it is called formalin. This formalin is used as a disinfectant in industries, a preservative in some food products, funeral homes, etc.

Used in industry
Used in medicine
Used in building and construction
Food and other uses
Formaldehyde uses in the industry:

Used in car manufacture, explosives, plastic, resins, chemicals, and other artificial materials. It is also used in sanitary products like paper towels, napkins, and tissues. Formalin is used as a disinfectant in industries.

Formaldehyde uses in medicine:

It kills many bacteria, fungi, etc so used as an antiseptic. Some parasites and warts are treated by formaldehyde. It helps to produce some vaccines and also sterilizes them. It can be used in the treatment of infections like urinary tract infections. Bacterial growth can be prevented

Formaldehyde uses in building and construction:

Formaldehyde resins are used to manufacture wooden products used widely in furniture, cabinetry, moldings, flooring, shelving, countertops, and other household furnishings. Wood panels are made from the wood which will be either disposed of or burned hence minimizing wood wastage

Formaldehyde uses in the food and others:

It is used as a preservative in food, paints, and cosmetics. Used as an antiseptic in medicine, disinfectant in the funeral home, used in making RDX. To improve the yield of fuels it is used in petroleum and natural gas industries. It is also used in the manufacture of ink.
