Potassium Iodate tablets are used at the time of a nuclear emergency; the tablets stop the thyroid gland (situated in your neck) taking up radioactive iodine, which may be released into the environment following a nuclear accident. Radioactive Iodine is harmful and especially dangerous to babies and children.

Application

Potassium iodate is sometimes used for iodination of table salt to prevent iodine deficiency. Because iodide can be oxidized to iodine by molecular oxygen under wet conditions, US companies add thiosulfates or other antioxidants to the potassium iodide

Potassium Iodate (KIO3) may be used as an oxidizing agent in the estimation of hydrolyzable tannins (gallotannins and ellagitannins) in plant samples. It may also be used in the preparation of polyaniline,poly(o-anisidine),poly[aniline-co-(o-anisidine) and TiO2 nanoparticles.
