Ammonium Sulfate

Ammonium sulfate (AMS), when added to herbicide sprays, can enhance weed control, especially with glyphosate, by conditioning water and improving herbicide uptake, particularly in hard water situations. 

 

 

Hard Water Antagonism: 

 

Hard water, rich in calcium and magnesium, can interfere with herbicide effectiveness by binding to the herbicide and preventing it from being absorbed by the plant.

 

AMS as a Water Conditioner: 

 

AMS acts as a water conditioner, neutralizing the negative effects of hard water by binding to the calcium and magnesium, making the herbicide more available for absorption. 

 

Improved Herbicide Uptake: 

 

By preventing the herbicide from binding to calcium and magnesium, AMS helps the herbicide penetrate the plant's waxy leaf surface and reach the growing point where it can kill the weed.

 

Enhanced Glyphosate Activity: 

 

AMS is particularly effective at enhancing glyphosate activity, even in distilled water, by increasing the amount of glyphosate absorbed by the plant and/or the amount that moves from the treated leaf to the growing point.
